They do have a performance edge but an Alfa Spider 2000 seems to cost double what a 124 Spider costs. I honestly prefer the looks of the 124 as well. I haven't driven either of them (but I will tomorrow!) but from my armchair it's hard to imagine I'll buy the Alfa over the Fiat.
Full disclosure: I'm torn between buying a pristine 1980 Fiat 124 Spider for $5k or a ratty but complete 1978 Alfa Spider for $7k. Alfa pictured.

Well you know how it goes with entry and premium brands... also, get the Fiat. Not only it seems to be a much better deal, it has a Twin Cam and that alone is worth the price of admission!

I'm leaning towards Fiat, man

Do it! Twin Cams are incapable of anything that isn't pure joy and the occasional hearing impairment!

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm test driving it tomorrow! It was recently brought back to health by my mechanic after its elderly Italian owner couldn't drive it any more. It's been off the road for 6 years!

Will do! Especially when they don't have bumpers!

Go Fiat the performance is basically the same plus it is a DOHC. But no matter what you get put double webers on it.

The Fiat already has been converted to that setup :)

Alfa is a specialty sports car company who competed in F1. They are engineered to compete and were advanced for their time.
Fiats are a volume economy car company who happened to make sports cars. They aren't as good.
Now, I would not recommend a beater Alfa. Find an older one owned by an alfa enthusiast having either Spica injection or upgraded carbs.
Even from an enthusiast you won't pay much of a premium but you will get a car that was cared for and have things like sticking brake calipers taken care of. A beater alfa that hasn't been driven for years is not a bargain....
Here is one example - http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/alfa…
Check Ebay - These cars go a lot cheaper than $7k http://www.ebay.com/itm/Alfa-Romeo…

The Alfa's DOHC as well btw. All alloy too, rather than just an alloy head.
Both legendary engines though.
